'It's as simple as that' - Flying Eagles coach stresses importance of Colombia showdown
Published: October 03, 2025
Flying Eagles coach Aliyu Zubairu has called on his team to sustain their winning momentum ahead of a crucial group stage encounter against Colombia at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Talca, Chile.
Following Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia, Zubairu praised his players’ determination and focus, which he described as key to securing the vital three points.
"The players made up their minds that they had to go all out for the three points here and that is what motivated them,” Zubairu told Fifa's official website.
"Now it’s simple that we have to go all out for the three points against Colombia, it's as simple as that."
The Flying Eagles currently sit third in Group F with three points, trailing Colombia and Norway, who are joint leaders with four points each.
Nigeria’s victory over Saudi Arabia, which came through Salihu Nasiru’s early header, Amos Ochoche’s strike, and a stoppage-time penalty from Daniel Bameyi, has revitalized their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
Zubairu’s side will now face Colombia in their final group match, knowing that a win is crucial to securing qualification.
As part of their preparations for the FIFA U20 World Cup, the Flying Eagles faced South American opposition, drawing 1-1 with hosts Chile in a friendly.
