Injury blow for club and country: Werder Bremen's Felix Agu out for several months, misses WCQ
Published: October 06, 2025
Werder Bremen have confirmed that Nigerian international Felix Agu will be sidelined for several months following a syndesmosis ligament injury sustained during the club's 1-0 home victory over FC St. Pauli.
The injury was confirmed after MRI and X-ray examinations conducted by team doctor Robert Gorzolla on Monday, as revealed by the club's official website.
The 26-year-old full-back had been a key figure for Bremen, consistently contributing on the right flank since returning from a previous setback.
Head coach Horst Steffen expressed concern for Agu's wellbeing, stating, "I'm incredibly sorry for Felix. We will do everything we can to get him fit again as quickly as possible.
"Unfortunately, however, we have to assume that Felix will be out of action for the foreseeable future."
The former Germany U21 international will now miss the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin, joining Birmingham City's Bright Osayi-Samuel and Panathinaikos striker Cyriel Dessers, who have also withdrawn from the games due to injury.
Agu had recently received a call-up to the Nigerian national team but was unable to make his competitive debut during the September internationals.
Playing in those matches would have officially cap-tied him to Nigeria.
Medical staff, coaching personnel, and Agu himself will now focus on the recovery process, aiming to ensure the defender can return to full fitness as soon as possible.
