Argentina 4-0 Nigeria: Five observations from Flying Eagles historic loss to La Albiceleste
Published: October 08, 2025
Nigeria's Flying Eagles crashed out of the FIFA U20 World Cup after suffering a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Argentina on Wednesday in Santiago.
The 4-0 setback carried historic weight, replicating the Flying Eagles' biggest losses at the FIFA U20 World Cup, against Brazil in 1987 and Chile in 2007.
Alejo Sarco opened the scoring early for the hosts, before Maher Carrizo netted twice and substitute Mateo Sivetti sealed the emphatic victory for the Argentines.
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the match.
Alejo Sarco extends impressive scoring run
Alejo Sarco maintained his outstanding form at the FIFA U20 World Cup, helping Argentina continue their perfect run in the tournament.
The prolific forward showcased his sharp instincts once again, tapping home from close range in the early minutes of the match to open the scoring.
The goal took his tally to four for the tournament, making him the current top scorer.
Referee makes correct Video Review calls
The centre referee consulted the Video Review system twice during the encounter.
The first incident came after Nigeria’s Coach Aliyu Zubairu requested a review for a possible penalty following a double challenge on Nasiru Salihu and Achichi Oseer inside the box.
After careful review, the referee ruled out the penalty appeal despite protests from the Nigerian players.
Later in the second half, the referee was again called to review a potential red-card offence involving Emmanuel Ekele.
Upon assessment, he decided against issuing a red card, concluding that the tackle was not dangerous enough to warrant a dismissal.
Flying Eagles’ defensive struggles continue
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles endured another difficult outing at the back, conceding four goals after a disorganized defensive display that allowed Argentina to create chances with ease.
The Nigerian defenders struggled to contain the movement and pace of the Argentine attackers, leading to several dangerous situations and clear scoring opportunities.
Defensive frailties have been a recurring issue for the team throughout the tournament, as they have conceded in every match played so far.
The Flying Eagles have also fallen behind first in three of their games, with their only victory coming against Saudi Arabia, the lone match in which they opened the scoring.
Over 5,000 spectators witness Flying Eagles defeat
There was a noticeable improvement in attendance at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago compared to previous group-stage fixtures, as 5,746 spectators turned up to watch the highly anticipated encounter.
A large section of the crowd showed their support for Nigeria, waving flags and cheering passionately throughout the game.
However, their excitement quickly turned to disappointment as the Flying Eagles succumbed to a heavy 4-0 defeat.
Ebenezer Harcourt fails to impress in crucial tie
Young goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt failed to replicate the outstanding performances that earned him praise during the tournament’s qualifying series.
The 15-year-old misjudged his positioning for the opening goal, allowing Alejo Sarco to tap into an empty net early in the game.
He was later beaten by a direct free kick in the second half, a situation where he was expected to make a routine save.
It was a night to forget for the promising shot-stopper, who will no doubt be disappointed with his display in such a crucial match.
