Club legend Mikel celebrates Chelsea's progress to UCL final after win vs Real Madrid
Published: May 05, 2021
Chelsea are into the Champions League final, an all-English final against Manchester City, after beating the competition's most successful club Real Madrid 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
The Blues came back from the Spanish capital with a 1-1 draw and the scoreline tonight would have been bigger if they had not squandered their goalscoring chances.
As for team news, there was no player of Nigerian descent involved in this one, with Faustino Anjorin and Marvin Akinlabi left out of the matchday squad by managers Thomas Tuchel and Zinedine Zidane respectively.
Timo Werner, with the easiest of headers, gave Chelsea the lead in the 28th minute after Kai Havertz saw his effort come off the crossbar and Mason Mount wrapped it up five minutes from time.
Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2012, John Obi Mikel was delighted with The Blues' progress to the showpiece which will hold at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul on May 29.
The defensive midfielder revealed two years ago that his most memorable match in a Chelsea shirt was the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
Chelsea took to Instagram to celebrate reaching the Champions League final, writing : "CHAMPIONS. LEAGUE. FINALISTS! 😍 #ChampionsLeague #CFC #Chelsea".
The post has been liked by over 430,000 of their fans and followers, including Mikel, who played 59 games in total for the Stamford Bridge outfit in the Champions League, scoring two goals.
