Ex-Super Eagles star criticises Sancho transfer to Man Utd, hails Ten Hag and Rashford
Published: January 10, 2023
Former Super Eagles forward, Victor Ikpeba has chided the Manchester United board for their transfer policies and the acquisition of players that were not of the highest level.
Speaking on the club's business in the transfer windows, the onetime Borussia Dortmund star on Supersport's Monday Night Football said one United player has particularly failed to justify the huge amount of money paid for his services.
"The truth is that the transfers of this great club have been bad, they overpay on players," Ikpeba opined.
"Look at this young lad, Jadon Sancho, that came from Borussia Dortmund. Why spend so much on him, about £70m on him - it's a waste of money.
"He (Sancho) was overpriced for a young player. But what this guy (Eric ten Hag) is doing is good.
Ikpeba insists that his doubts over the return of Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to his former club have been justified.
"I was criticized when I said that Cristiano Ronaldo coming back to Man United was a distraction. The fans will come and apologize to me," Ikpeba said cheekily.
"What this manager (ten Hag) is doing is that he's placing emphasis on young players and he's not afraid of dropping them. He doesn't care if whether you're a Ronaldo or Maguire. He drops you.
"This is what great managers do - Sir Alex Ferguson, Jurgen Klopp. I won't sit down here and guarantee that United will pick up wins in their next six games like Manchester City, Arsenal could do.
The 1997 African Footballer of the Year winner then thumbed up the current form of United players especially Marcus Rashford.
"They (Man United) have been playing well. The manner that Marcus Rashford has been playing since Ronaldo left has been great.
"Rashford can take on defenders. Last season, he had his injuries worries but I'm happy that he's quietened his critics by his performances so far," Ikpeba stressed.
