Middlesbrough fear Hale End product Akpom could depart if they miss out on promotion

Middlesbrough are worried about the future of former England youth teamer of Nigerian descent Chuba Akpom.

The Hale End Academy product will enter the last one year of his contract at the Riverside Stadium at the end of the 2022-2023 season.

According to The Daily Mirror, via West Ham Zone, there are growing fears that Akpom could leave Middlesbrough in the event that they fail to secure promotion to the Premier League.

With Burnley and Sheffield United sealing automatic promotion to the top-flight, there's only promotion place up for grabs via the Championship playoffs.

Middlesbrough are guaranteed a playoff spot regardless of the outcome of their two remaining matches in the division against Rotherham United and Coventry City.

Per the report, Everton, Leicester City and West Ham United have been monitoring the 27-year-old former Arsenal trainee.

Akpom was recently named the Championship Player of the Season on the back of an outstanding season with Boro in which he has notched 29 goals in 38 all-competition appearances.

Werder Bremen and Borussia Mönchengladbach are also keeping tabs on Akpom with a view to launching a bid for the striker's services in the summer.
