Peseiro agrees to coach Zamalek on one condition, can terminate Nigeria contract without consequences
Published: November 21, 2023
Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro has reportedly agreed to take over the managerial reins at Egyptian giants Zamalek but on one condition.
Egyptian satellite television channel Sada El-Balad is reporting that the Portuguese is demanding US$70,000.00 - US$80,000.00 per month to succeed Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who was dismissed following Zamalek's poor run of results.
Zamalek have informed Peseiro that his salary demands are beyond what the club can afford for now considering the poor results of El Fares El Abyad.
The former Saudi Arabia and Venezuela coach was paid $70,000 a month by the Nigerian Federation before agreeing to a pay cut to continue as coach of the Super Eagles on a short-term deal.
Peseiro's future as Super Eagles coach is up in the air following the national team's poor start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with two points in their opening two games in Group C after playing out draws with Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
Nse Essien, a Board Member of the Nigeria Football Federation, has admitted that Peseiro is not capable of leading the national team and only a lack of resources is preventing the Portuguese from being fired
Despite unpaid wages, Peseiro is still at the helm of the Super Eagles and it should be noted that under Fifa rules, he can unilaterally terminate his Nigeria contract with just cause due to breach of contract by his employers.
The 63-year-old has been coaching the Super Eagles since May 2022 and his record stands at six wins, three draws and five losses in his fourteen games in charge.
