Nigerian forward becomes Man Utd's youngest PL starter in historic match against Brentford
Published: May 04, 2025
Danish-born Nigerian forward Chido Obi etched his name into Premier League folklore with his inclusion in the starting lineup in Sunday afternoon's 4-3 loss to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
United coach Ruben Amorim decided to rotate his squad with an eye on Thursday's Europa League semifinal second leg against Athletic Club at Old Trafford.
Obi is not eligible to be fielded in the upcoming clash with the La Liga side as he has not been registered for the Europa League and does not qualify to be included on List B, having spent less than a year at Manchester United following his move from Arsenal
According to the official website of the Red Devils, making reference to football statisticians Opta, Obi is now the youngest starter for Manchester United in a Premier League match, aged 17 years and 156 days, breaking the record previously held by Mason Greenwood (17 years and 223 days).
It was also a historic game for Manchester United as they fielded the club's youngest-ever starting lineup in a Premier League match, with the eleven players averaging 22 years and 270 days.
Including today's clash against the Bees, Obi has recorded seven appearances for Manchester United's first team, logging 203 minutes.
Angel Gomes is the youngest player to appear in a Premier League match for Manchester United when he made his debut as a substitute at the age of 16 years and 263 days in 2017 against Crystal Palace.
