Chelsea midfielder whose dad played for Nigeria and Liverpool kid named in England's U17 Euro squad
Published: May 12, 2025
England U17s head coach Neil Ryan has announced his roster for the 2025 European U17 Championship, with three Nigeria-eligible players making the cut.
Chelsea midfielder Landon Emenalo, West Ham United goalkeeper Lanre Awesu and Liverpool forward Rio Ngumoha have been named in the 21-man group.
Landon is the son of former Super Eagles left-back and former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo, who shone for Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup as cover for the injured Benedict Iroha.
Born in Arizona, Landon is also eligible to represent his country of birth, the United States, but has been provisionally cap-tied to England since October 2024 when he made his competitive debut for the Young Lions in a European Championship qualifier against Malta.
Following his competitive debut for the Young Lions in October 2024, Ngumoha is provisionally cap-tied to England, delivering an assist against Malta, just as Emenalo did.
West Ham starlet Awesu played his first competitive game for the Young Lions in an U17 Euro qualifier in March 2025, posting a clean sheet in a 5-0 rout of Northern Ireland.
Emenalo and Ngumoha received call-ups for first team games this season, with the forward making his professional debut in an Emirates FA Cup clash against Accrington Stanley.
Aged 16 years and 135 days, Ngumoha became the youngest-ever player to have represented Liverpool in the FA Cup, breaking the record previously held by Trey Nyoni.
2017 world champions England will face Belgium, Italy and Czech Republic in the group stage of the 2025 European U17 Championship.
