'The record is a great thing' - Galatasaray striker Osimhen reacts after record-breaking brace
Published: May 15, 2025
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has expressed deep appreciation to his teammates and fans after breaking a club record with his brace in Galatasaray’s 3-1 win over Trabzonspor.
The Nigerian forward scored twice to take his tally to 35 goals for the season, a milestone that cements his place in the Turkish club’s history books.
With his brace, the Nigerian international has broken the legendary Mario Jardel’s long-standing record of 34 goals, becoming the highest-scoring foreign player in a single season since the 2000-2001 campaign.
The Napoli loanee is the first foreign player to score a brace for Galatasaray in the Turkish Cup final, according to the statisticians at Opta.
In quotes relayed by Galatasaray's official website, Osimhen praised his teammates for their support, singling out Yunus Akgün for his contribution during the match.
"I think the record is of course a great thing, but I would like to thank my teammates very much. Especially today, Yunus was very unifying," Osimhen said.
"Goals make me happy, of course, but I want to reciprocate the support my teammates have given me since I came here with goals.
" I am very happy to score goals, but it is a separate pleasure for me to go down in the history of this great club. We will continue to fight until the end of the season."
Osimhen also acknowledged the emotional connection he shares with the Galatasaray fans, who have embraced him with overwhelming support since his arrival on loan from Napoli.
"I really can't stand it, they show me so much love. There is a fan base here that gives everything for the team. There is an incredible passion that I have never seen in my career," he said.
Amid ongoing speculation about his future, Osimhen hinted at a major decision awaiting him after the season ends.
"Finally, I have to make a very big decision. Everyone at the club, the fans, my family have been really supportive throughout this process.
"I would also like to thank my daughter and send my regards from here. I will continue to give everything for the team until the end of the season. Then we will make our decisions.”
Osimhen has been linked with top European clubs, though Galatasaray are interested in extending his stay.
With the Cup title secured, the 26-year-old will now turn his attention to the league, aiming to lead the Yellow-Reds to a domestic double by the end of the season.
