'When Nigeria loses, it feels like a national crisis' — GK Nnadozie on pressure facing Super Falcons
Published: May 19, 2025
Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has opened up about the immense pressure that comes with wearing the national jersey and representing a team with a storied legacy in African women’s football.
Speaking to CAF’s official website, Nnadozie acknowledged the weight of expectations placed on the Super Falcons.
"Absolutely. Wearing the Super Falcons jersey means carrying a legacy. It means playing for the generations before us who won everything," she said.
Nigeria’s women’s team holds the record for the most Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) titles, with 11 championships to their name.
This unparalleled success has established them as a continental powerhouse and the team to beat in every tournament.
Nnadozie emphasized how the spotlight is uniquely intense on Nigeria compared to other teams.
"The spotlight is always on us. When another team loses, it’s not a big deal. When Nigeria loses, it feels like a national crisis!” she explained.
This reflects the passion and high expectations of Nigerian fans, who demand nothing less than excellence from their team.
While the pressure can be daunting, Nnadozie highlighted the importance of managing it positively.
"We’re athletes; we make mistakes too," she said. "The key is to turn that pressure into positive energy and motivation."
This mindset is crucial to maintaining the Super Falcons' focus and performing at their best, especially during high-stakes tournaments like the WAFCON and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons are preparing to compete in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they aim to reclaim the title they lost in Morocco in 2022.
For Nnadozie, the mission is clear. "Our goal is clear: to go all the way, but with focus and intelligence."
