'One standout player' - Flying Eagles midfielder compared to Oliseh, Declan Rice by Nigerian coach

Flying Eagles midfielder Israel Ayuma has drawn high praise following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, with former Golden Eaglets assistant coach Bunmi Haruna comparing the youngster to Nigerian legend Sunday Oliseh and England international Declan Rice.

Ayuma played a key role in Nigeria’s 4-1 penalty shootout victory over hosts Egypt in the bronze medal match, having helped drive the team’s midfield efforts throughout the tournament.

Haruna, speaking to allnigeriasoccer.com, described the 19-year-old as the 'standout player' for the Flying Eagles.

"One standout player for me was midfielder Israel Ayuma. He showcases a combination of qualities reminiscent of Sunday Oliseh and England’s Declan Rice," Haruna said.

"He exudes confidence and is clearly aware of his abilities, including his powerful strikes that leave goalkeepers trembling."

While Ayuma failed to find the net from open play during the competition, his long-range efforts often troubled opposition defences.

His ability to dictate the tempo and contribute both defensively and in transition stood out in Nigeria’s midfield setup. Haruna, however, believes there is room for improvement.

"He could benefit from guidance to excel at set pieces," the Nigerian coach added, suggesting refinement in Ayuma’s technique could elevate his impact at international level.

Haruna also offered praise for Nigeria’s overall defensive structure, particularly highlighting 15-year-old goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt.

"Defensively, the team appeared solid, especially with goalkeeper Harcourt in goal," Haruna noted.

"However, substitute goalkeeper Ajia Yukub looked unsteady when dealing with crosses. He was largely at fault for the goal conceded against South Africa and showed similar weaknesses against Egypt."

Haruna warned that Nigeria must address such vulnerabilities ahead of the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup, stressing that top international opponents will be quick to exploit any visible flaws.

“At the World Cup, every observed weakness will be targeted by well-prepared teams,” he said.

Ayuma’s rise and Harcourt’s heroics suggest a bright future for Nigeria’s youth setup, but with global competition on the horizon, the Flying Eagles will need to refine their game further to compete at the highest level.
