'The right move' - Arsenal product Okonkwo reflects on permanent switch to Wrexham

Arsenal youth product Arthur Okonkwo has described his decision to join Wrexham permanently last summer as the "right move" after playing a pivotal role in the club's back-to-back promotions.

The 23-year-old, who initially joined Wrexham on loan in the 2023/24 season, returned as a free agent last summer and was instrumental in their recent League One campaign.

Okonkwo kept an impressive 19 clean sheets in 33 league appearances, helping the Welsh side clinch automatic promotion to the Championship.

Wrexham sealed their rise to England's second tier with a convincing 3-0 home win over Charlton Athletic, sparking jubilant celebrations at the Racecourse Ground.

Speaking to Leader Live, Okonkwo expressed immense satisfaction with his decision to commit to the club, crediting manager Phil Parkinson for his clear vision and leadership.

"It was definitely the right move and I'm extremely happy," said Okonkwo.

"When I spoke to the gaffer last summer before I joined, straight away I knew that this was the right move.

"The manager had a plan, he said he wanted to go and do it again, and I signed.

"I have belief in the manager and the decisions he's made and the players he brought in."

Reflecting on the promotion, Okonkwo said the achievement came as no surprise to him, highlighting the quality and belief within the squad.

"As much as it's a surprise to people, it's not the biggest surprise for me.

"I knew that we were going to compete this season. I said from the beginning that I had high hopes for us getting promotion."

"I never had any doubt and there is so much relief and one of the best feelings knowing that we've done it.

"It was unreal. a really emotional day. We've been working so hard towards that goal for the whole season and to finally achieve it is an unreal moment."

The young goalkeeper praised the team's composure under pressure, particularly in the final match that secured their top-two finish.

"We had that pressure before the game against Charlton but we're a good set of lads who can handle that pressure and it showed.

"It was never in any doubt. We knew what had to be done and I'm so proud of the boys and everyone that's worked towards this together."

Looking ahead to life in the Championship, Okonkwo acknowledged the challenge but expressed confidence in the team's readiness.

"Now it's just working towards next season.

"We're going to have to change a lot of things and improve but for now, I am just going to enjoy it and soak it all in, and focus on next season when it's there."

Ahead of the upcoming campaign, Okonkwo will hope to continue his fine form to ensure Wrexham secure promotion to the Premier League.
