Felix Agu: The reason Bundesliga's most prolific penalty winner can't debut for Super Eagles at Unity Cup
Published: May 21, 2025
Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has invited Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu to train with the team ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London.
Chelle unveiled a 26-man squad for the Unity Cup, along with a trimmed 21-player list for the international friendly against Russia.
Notably, key players such as Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, and Alex Iwobi were left out of both squads.
Agu, who was in impressive form for Werder Bremen in the recently concluded season with three goals in 22 Bundesliga appearances, has been offered a training opportunity with the Nigerian team.
In the 2024-2025 Bundesliga season, Felix Agu was the most prolific penalty winner, winning three penalties for Werder Bremen, more than any other player in the German top-flight, according to Squawka.
His invitation comes as several Super Eagles regulars remain committed to their club duties.
Although he will train with the team during the Unity Cup, Agu was not included in the squad to face Russia on June 6 at the Luzhniki Stadium.
His inclusion has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerian fans, especially as the Super Eagles ramp up preparations for the resumption of their 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying campaign.
Felix Agu won’t debut for the Super Eagles due to incomplete paperwork, with German outlet Die DeichStube citing bureaucratic hurdles as the cause.
Born in Germany, Agu represented the country at the U21 level, earning two caps in 2019.
However, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria as he has yet to make a senior appearance for Germany.
Nigeria will compete in the Unity Cup tournament alongside Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The Super Eagles will take on Ghana in the second semifinal on May 28 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
