Ajayi unused substitute as Tottenham Hotspur stun Man Utd to clinch Europa League
Published: May 21, 2025
Damola Ajayi, a Nigerian-eligible youngster, was an unused substitute as Tottenham Hotspur secured its first European trophy in 41 years with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao on Wednesday night.
Tottenhan Hotspur's top goalscorer Brennan Johnson netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 42nd minute with a flicked finish from close range.
Ajayi, who is a product of Tottenham's academy, is having an excellent campaign with the senior and youth teams.
The young forward has been a key part of the youth team in the Premier League 2, scoring three goals and providing one assist in eighteen league appearances.
His performance and several injuries to senior players prompted his promotion to the senior team. The young forward continued his impressive display with the first team.
The impressive display convinced Ange Postecoglu to give him his debut in a 3-0 victory over Elfsborg in the group stage of the Europa League in January.
Ajayi replaced Brazilian forward Richarlison with nine minutes to the end of the game and scored his debut goal for Tottenham within three minutes of his introduction.
Ahead of the upcoming campaign, Ajayi will be hoping to maintain his impressive form and potentially earn more minutes with the senior team.
Meanwhile, the victory ensures that Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou maintains his streak of winning a trophy in his second season at every club he has managed.
