Fifa CWC: Borussia Dortmund in talks with Chelsea over short-term deal to keep tri-national midfielder
Published: May 23, 2025
Borussia Dortmund are exploring a rare short-term contract solution to retain Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
The Austrian-English-Nigerian midfielder, whose loan deal expires on June 30, may see his stay in Germany extended by an additional 14 days to allow him to complete the tournament with the German Bundesliga side.
The Club World Cup, scheduled from June 15 to July 13, overlaps awkwardly with the expiration of Chukwuemeka's loan.
To avoid losing the player mid-competition, Dortmund has initiated talks with Chelsea about a two-week extension, according to Bild, via Ruhr24.
Club officials believe this brief continuation would be beneficial for squad stability during the crucial latter stages of the tournament.
Chukwuemeka, despite impressing during his time at Signal Iduna Park, is not expected to remain at the club beyond this summer.
Dortmund have no intention of triggering the €35 million purchase option attached to the current loan agreement, and another full-season loan is reportedly off the table.
The player’s injury record and ongoing fitness concerns are seen as major obstacles to any long-term commitment.
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl, CEO Lars Ricken, and head coach Niko Kovac are all in favor of retaining Chukwuemeka temporarily.
However, the club is simultaneously preparing for his exit and has shifted focus to alternative targets, including Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham and Lyon’s Rayan Cherki.
Dortmund’s summer is expected to be dominated by the Club World Cup and a scheduled pre-season training camp.
While Chukwuemeka’s time at the club may be brief, extending his deal until mid-July would allow BVB to maintain midfield depth as they aim to make a deep run in the tournament.
The proposed two-week extension would represent a rare and tailored transfer solution, offering a short-term fix to a scheduling conflict while reflecting Dortmund's careful squad planning.
If an agreement is reached, Chukwuemeka could play his final games in black and yellow under the global spotlight before returning to Chelsea.
