Prolific Chelsea striker provisionally cap-tied to England spotted with Super Eagles coach in London
Published: May 30, 2025
Prolific Chelsea youth team striker Chizzy Ezenwata was among several dual-eligible players who visited the Super Eagles in London ahead of Saturday’s Unity Cup final against Jamaica at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The highly rated 16-year-old, who is provisionally cap-tied to England, made headlines last year after scoring a brace on his competitive debut for the Young Lions in a UEFA U17 Championship qualifier against Malta.
Regarded as one of the standout prospects in Chelsea’s academy, Ezenwata impressed club coaches, making his debut in the U18 Premier League, Premier League Cup, FA Youth Cup, and Premier League 2 while still a schoolboy.
He went on to score 12 goals across 24 appearances in those competitions during the 2024-2025 season.
He comes from a footballing family—his father, Ndubuisi Ezenwata, is a former Gombe United star who played under renowned youth coach Manu Garba during his career in Nigeria.
The elder Ezenwata has long expressed a desire to see his son represent Nigeria, despite the youngster being eligible for England and Cameroon.
"Any player who passes through our youth system could make it into any club in the world and just perform, when you look at the likes of Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, Obi Mikel, Kanu Nwankwo," Ndubuisi Ezenwata told allnigeriasoccer.com last year.
"That is why I want him to play for Nigeria youth levels and all the way to the Super Eagles.
"It's up to him to make a decision when he becomes an adult. I have spoken to him and his younger brother and they are really excited about it."
During his visit to the Super Eagles camp this week, Chizzy was spotted with head coach Eric Chelle.
Ezenwata, who counts Tottenham Hotspur and Charlton Athletic as his former clubs, is eligible to play for Cameroon through his mother.
