'No bigger honour' – Sevilla striker eyes Super Eagles call-up, tips Ogbu to be Nigeria's best-ever CB

Sevilla striker Akor Adams has spoken about his lifelong dream of playing for the Super Eagles, describing the opportunity to wear Nigeria’s iconic green and white jersey as the highest honour any player from the country could hope for.

The 25-year-old also offered glowing praise for Slavia Prague defender Igoh Ogbu, confidently predicting that he could go on to become Nigeria’s best-ever centre-back.

"I think there's rarely a Nigerian kid who plays football that does not dream of wearing the shirt. Where I come from, playing in the national team, there is no bigger honour than that," Adams told SLUM2STARDOM. 

While Adams has already made his mark at club level, representing Sevilla in Spain’s top flight, he emphasised the unique pride that comes with playing for the national team.

"I am honoured to play for Sevilla with all my heart but representing your country that your parents are from, and that you are from, that you have roots and connections and friends is like an army man taking up everything to go for peacekeeping for the country.

"It's the same as representing Nigeria, there is no greater honour for me."

Adams, who joined Sevilla from Montpellier in the winter transfer window, has been sidelined by two muscle injuries that curtailed his ability to make an impact during the latter part of the 2024/25 season. 

Despite those setbacks, Adams remains determined to contribute both for club and, hopefully, country.

Asked to name his top five Nigerian players of all time, Adams admitted he excluded his close friend Ogbu to avoid any suggestion of bias, yet made clear how highly he rates the centre-back’s talent.

"I think for the centre-back, so it doesn't sound like favouritism, I would have put my friend Igoh Ogbu. 

"I am not doing favouritism, I think he's going to be best Nigeria ever had," he explained. "Trust me, he's reliable, he is consistent."

Igoh Ogbu recently earned his first cap for the Super Eagles in May, featuring in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Ghana at the 2025 Unity Cup held in London. 

His performance has heightened expectations among supporters that he could become a cornerstone of Nigeria’s defence in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles, now under the guidance of new manager Eric Chelle, are preparing to resume their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in September. 

The three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions will head into these decisive fixtures buoyed by their Unity Cup triumph and a recent 1-1 draw against Russia in an international friendly.

For Adams, whose ambition to wear the national colours remains as strong as ever, and for Ogbu, who is beginning to establish himself on the international stage, the coming months could mark the beginning of a new and hopeful chapter for Nigerian football.
