Nigeria 3 Ghana 1: First-ever African to play in WSL among the scorers in Super Falcons win
Published: June 29, 2025
The Super Falcons of Nigeria secured an emphatic 3-1 victory over arch-rivals Ghana on Sunday evening in their final preparatory match ahead of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Former Liverpool and Arsenal forward Asisat Oshoala, the first-ever African to play and score in the Women's Super League (WSL), was among the scorers for the nine-time African champions.
Chiwendu Ihezuo and captain Rasheedat Ajibade also got their names on the scoresheet as the Super Falcon sealed a commanding win.
The Falcons took control of the game from the first blast of the whistle, dominating possession and consistently pinning Ghana back with relentless attacking pressure.
Despite their early control, the breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Ihezuo capitalized on a defensive error by the Ghanaians to slot home the opener.
Just ten minutes later, Nigeria doubled their lead through a well-taken penalty by Asisat Oshoala.
The returning forward, who recently returned to the team for WAFCON, calmly converted from the spot in the 44th minute to hand the Super Falcons a deserved 2-0 lead going into the break.
Five minutes into the second half, Ajibade put the game beyond Ghana’s reach with a cool finish after a fluid team move.
The Ghanaians struggled to match the tempo and physicality of the Super Falcons throughout the encounter and rarely threatened the Nigerian defense.
However, Alice Kusi pulled one back for the Ghanaians with two minutes to the end of the game.
The result gives head coach Justin Madugu a major confidence boost ahead of the continental showpiece in Morocco, as the Falcons aim to win a record-extending tenth WAFCON title.
