Genoa wing-back agrees Atalanta move, becomes Nigeria's joint most expensive 17yo in history
Published: July 01, 2025
Atalanta are on the brink of confirming the signing of Italian-born Nigerian defender Honest Ahanor from Genoa, according to transfer market guru Fabrizio Romano.
He replaces Italy U21 international Matteo Ruggeri, who has been linked with an imminent transfer to Atlético Madrid .
The 2024 Europa League winners have secured Ahanor's signature in a deal worth €20 million, including €15 million guaranteed and a further €5 million in performance-related add-ons.
His move to the Nerazzurri makes him Nigeria's joint-most expensive 17-year-old in history, matching the €20 million deal that took George Ilenikhena from Antwerp to AS Monaco last summer
After being heavily sought after by European clubs including AC Milan, Ahanor has agreed a deal with Atalanta until 2028.
The left-footed wing-back possesses strong pace and acceleration over long distances.
He is also a good ball carrier whose aggressive defending makes him a profile that is as unique and valuable to Atalanta.
Ahanor will have the chance to establish himself next season with potential top flight and Champions League games.
He could form a strong partnership with Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman on the left flank should the 2024 African Footballer of the Year remain at the club.
