Nigeria v South Africa: Three key Banyana Banyana players to watch in Wafcon 2024 semifinal

Nigeria's Super Falcons face a formidable challenge today as they take on defending champions South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semifinal at Larbi Zaouli Stadium.

With a place in the final against either Ghana or Morocco at stake, Nigeria must be wary of South Africa’s tactical discipline and key performers.

Here are three Banyana Banyana players the Super Falcons should closely monitor.

Linda Motlhalo (midfield maestro)

Linda Motlhalo, a steady and reliable midfielder, is a pivotal figure for South Africa.

Motlhalo’s vision and precision dictate Banyana’s tempo. Her ability to orchestrate play from deep and deliver incisive passes could exploit any lapses in Nigeria’s midfield.

The Super Falcons, guided by coach Justin Madugu’s emphasis on dominating the midfield, must neutralize Motlhalo’s influence to disrupt South Africa’s possession-based approach.

Her role in transitioning play makes her a constant threat.

Andile Dlamini (goalkeeping hero)

Veteran goalkeeper Andile Dlamini has been a rock for Banyana Banyana, notably with her penalty shootout heroics against Senegal in the quarterfinals.

Her vocal leadership and ability to inspire calm under pressure make her a formidable last line of defense.

Dlamini’s shot-stopping prowess and quick distribution could frustrate Nigeria’s attacking stars like Esther Okoronkwo and Rasheedat Ajibade.

The Super Falcons, who have scored nine goals without conceding in this tournament, will need to be clinical to breach Dlamini’s goal. Her experience could be decisive in a tightly contested match.

Hildah Magaia (attacking spark)

With Thembi Kgatlana absent from the squad, forward Hildah Magaia steps up as South Africa’s primary attacking threat. Her pace and finishing were evident in Banyana’s 4-0 rout of Mali during the group stage.

Magaia’s ability to exploit spaces behind defenses poses a challenge for Nigeria’s unbreached backline, led by Osinachi Ohale.

The Super Falcons must maintain their compact defensive shape, as advised by former star Desire Oparanozie, to counter Magaia’s runs and prevent her from capitalizing on transitions.

The Super Falcons’ firepower and defensive solidity give them an edge, but these three players could tilt the balance in this high-stakes semifinal.
