Super Eagles star who once passed Gunners medical features in AC Milan's loss to Arsenal
Published: July 23, 2025
Samuel Chukwueze featured for AC Milan as they fell 1-0 to Arsenal in a pre-season friendly at the National Stadium in Singapore on Wednesday afternoon.
The 26-year-old forward, who once passed a medical with Arsenal as a teenager before a proposed move collapsed, was introduced at the start of the second half.
However, he was unable to spark a comeback for the Rossoneri after Bukayo Saka’s 53rd-minute goal gave the Gunners a deserved win.
Saka, who was born to Nigerian parents but chose to represent England at international level, capitalised on a fine cross from Jakub Kiwior to steer home the only goal of the contest.
The Arsenal winger wore the captain’s armband and was a constant threat on the right flank throughout his time on the pitch.
Also involved in the match were several players of Nigerian descent. Arsenal’s 18-year-old midfielder Ethan Nwaneri, eligible to represent Nigeria despite having already featured for England’s youth teams, was named in the starting XI and impressed with his movement and technique during the first half.
Teenage defender Josh Nichols, another Nigerian-eligible talent, was brought on in the 67th minute as Arsenal rotated their squad heavily in the second half. Nichols, though not seriously tested, looked composed between the sticks.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Arsenal forward Andre Harriman-Annous, also eligible for Nigeria, was named on the bench but remained an unused substitute.
The match served as an early test for both clubs as they prepare for the 2025–26 season.
For Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the performance offered a chance to assess the blend of established stars, new signings, and academy products.
Chukwueze, who joined AC Milan from Villarreal in 2023, will hope to build momentum in the coming games as he seeks to cement his place in the Milan starting XI.
