Super Falcons Wafcon heroine Alozie reveals why she chose Nigeria over the United States
Published: July 24, 2025
Michelle Alozie has revealed the personal and cultural motivations behind her decision to represent Nigeria rather than the United States, where she was born and raised.
The 28-year-old, whose parents hail from Imo State, made the heartfelt choice ahead of her 2021 debut with the Super Falcons during the USWNT Summer Series in Houston.
"I just knew that I always wanted to have a Nigerian name on a Nigerian jersey,” Alozie said in a interview with BBC Pidgin.
"That’s always what I wanted. Being in camp with people who are just like me or have similar backgrounds is amazing and kind of just feels like an automatic sisterhood.
"So it was super nice to be able to have so many like-minded individuals from the same culture together reaching the same goal."
She added: “The Nigerian fans are amazing. I think they bring a lot to the atmosphere.
"They bring us a lot of support and encouragement, especially when we know that times are hard. And so, it’s amazing to play for them and play for something just bigger than us."
Alozie’s passion for her heritage has translated into standout performances at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), currently underway in Morocco.
In a thrilling semi-final clash against defending champions South Africa, Alozie scored a dramatic 94th-minute long-range goal to seal a 2-1 victory.
The stunning strike, described as a 'sensational screamer,' looped over goalkeeper Andile Dlamini and sent Nigeria into the final, avenging their 2022 defeat to Banyana Banyana.
Throughout the tournament, Alozie has been vital on both ends of the pitch, combining defensive stability with attacking flair.
Her dangerous deliveries and link-up play with Chinwendu Ihezuo have posed constant threats, while Nigeria’s 5-0 quarter-final demolition of Zambia underlined the team’s dominance.
With her sights now set on helping Nigeria secure a record-extending 10th WAFCON title, Alozie continues to advocate for greater representation of African players in the NWSL.
