Chelsea take talented Nigerian centre-back on trial following Peterborough United exit
Published: July 26, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that Chelsea have taken promising Nigerian centre-back Justin Osagie on trial with a view to a potential permanent deal.
The 19-year-old is currently a free agent following the expiration of his contract with EFL League One side Peterborough United at the end of June.
Osagie featured for Chelsea U21s during a pre-season friendly against League Two outfit Bromley at the CopperJax Community Stadium last Saturday, with his Nigerian father watching on from the stands.
Nigerian defender Omar Sowunmi was among the scorers for Bromley with a trademark header.
The trialist was one of four players of Nigerian descent to appear for Chelsea in that encounter, alongside Tayo Subuloye, Landon Emenalo and Chizzy Ezenwata.
Osagie's career has taken him through the youth ranks at Southend United and West Ham United, before a move to Scotland to join Celtic.
He returned to England in October 2024, signing for Peterborough United after impressing on trial.
The highly-rated teenager had previously been linked with top Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton & Hove Albion before his switch to Celtic.
Eligible to represent both Nigeria and the Republic of Ireland, Osagie has been invited to a Republic of Ireland U19 training camp in the past but is yet to make his competitive debut for the Boys in Green.
