Back with a bang: Super Eagles star Uche scores and assist in Getafe's 2-0 win at Celta Vigo
Published: August 17, 2025
Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche continued his fine form from last season, scoring and assisting in Getafe's 2-0 road win over Celta Vigo in their La Liga opener on Sunday.
The 22-year-old, who was a key figure for the Madrid-based side last campaign, set up the opener before sealing the win with a late goal.
After a goalless first half, the Nigerian international set up the breakthrough just two minutes into the second half, delivering a precise cut-back that Adrian Liso buried into the net to put Getafe ahead.
He maintained his outstanding display throughout the match and was eventually rewarded with a goal of his own, eighteen minutes to the end of the game.
The Nigerian midfielder latched onto a long pass, outmuscled two defenders, rounded the goalkeeper, and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net to the delight of the home crowd.
Uche, a fan favourite at Getafe, was instrumental for the club last season, contributing four goals and six assists in 33 league appearances
His impressive displays stirred uncertainty over his future at the club and eventually earned him a maiden call-up to the Super Eagles during the Unity Cup tournament in May.
The Nigerian midfielder found himself at the centre of transfer speculation, with reports linking him with several Premier League clubs.
As the season progresses, both Getafe and the Super Eagles will be hoping he maintains his form, with Eric Chelle counting on him ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.
