Official: Carney Chukwuemeka departs Chelsea for good after 32 appearances
Published: August 26, 2025
Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the permanent signing of England youth international Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea, bringing an end to the midfielder's three-year stay at Stamford Bridge.
Chukwuemeka, 21, has put pen to paper on a five-year contract that runs until June 30, 2030.
The Austrian-born talent of Nigerian descent joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022, making 32 competitive appearances for the Blues, scoring twice and providing one assist.
The move marks a return to familiar surroundings for Chukwuemeka, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund.
He featured in 17 matches for Die Schwarzgelben, netting once, and also represented the club at the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup, where he made four appearances.
Speaking after sealing his permanent switch, Chukwuemeka expressed delight at committing his long-term future to the Bundesliga giants.
“It feels really good to now be an integral part of BVB,” Chukwuemeka stated.
"I've gotten to know this club, the coach, my teammates, and the fans over the past few months, and I'm just happy that Borussia Dortmund is now my new footballing home.
"I will give everything I can to ensure that we achieve our goals as a team."
The midfielder will continue to wear the number 17 shirt at Dortmund, the same number he donned during his loan spell last season.
Chukwuemeka becomes the second Chelsea midfielder with Nigerian roots to leave permanently this summer, following Lesley Ugochukwu's move to Premier League newcomers Burnley.
