'An English Championship team was interested' - Burgos CF chief on Barnsley-linked Nwakali
Published: February 02, 2022
Michu, sporting director of Burgos CF, has admitted that the club attempted to sign SD Huesca's Kelechi Nwakali before the close of the January transfer window but the deal did not materialize.
Allnigeriasoccer.com broke the news that Burgos CF were pushing to sign the 2015 U17 World Cup winner on transfer deadline day, only for the deal to collapse due to incomplete documentation.
This website also reported that Championship outfit Barnsley were among the teams interested in Nwakali in the final days of the winter transfer market, and Michu has more or less confirmed the information, saying that Burgos CF faced competition from an unnamed English second-tier club for the services of the Super Eagles star.
Allnigeriasoccer.com can also report with certainty that Malaga CF expressed an interest in signing Nwakali before the midfielder's failed move to Burgos CF.
Asked to confirm reports of a deadline day move for Nwakali, Michu was quoted as saying by BURGOSconecta.es : "It was not a simple operation, a team from the English Championship was interested, another team from the Spanish Segunda Division, the boy was outside of Spain.
"It was at the very last minute of the market, it was a transfer from Huesca, a complicated operation and in the end it did not happen.
"He is a good footballer and we had options to incorporate him".
Nwakali has entered the final five months of his contract with SD Huesca and has rejected several proposals to extend his contract.
