Shoretire benched as Garnacho sets new Man Utd record in win v Real Sociedad
Published: November 03, 2022Anglo-Nigerian striker Shola Shoretire was among the Manchester United substitutes in Thursday's matchday 6 clash against Real Sociedad at the Reala Stadium-San Sebastian in a game Erik ten Hag's side won 1-0 but fell short of topping Group E, reports allnigeriasoccer.com.
Shoretire has scored four goals in eight appearances in the Premier League two goals for United this season and received his first call up for a competitive game this season thanks to his iimpressive displays for the development squad.
It was against Real Sociedad that he made his Europa League bow in February 2021 at the age of 17 years and 23 days.
However, it was another United academy product Alejandro Garnacho that put United ahead in the 17th minute when he was released by 37-year-old superstar Cristiano Ronaldo whom United signed for the first time in 2003 when Garnacho was not yet born.
United needed to triumph by a two-goal margin in order to secure first spot in the group and an automatic spot in the last sixteen of the Europa League.
Garnacho (18 years, 125 days) became the youngest non-English goalscorer in Europe for the Red Devils, a record previously held by a United great, George Best (18 years, 158 days).
United went close a number of times in the second half in a bid to find the needed second goal but could not get it before the final whistle.
