'I had a chance in the first half' - Iwobi admits Everton not clinical in loss to Leicester
Published: November 06, 2022
Alex Iwobi believes Everton lost their Premier League clash against Leicester City on Saturday evening for the simple reason that they did not take their chances.
A Goal of the Season contender by Youri Tielemans just before halftime and Harvey Barnes' 86th minute strike were enough for the Foxes to secure their third win in four matches.
Perhaps, the story would have been different if the Everton players were more clinical in front of goal before Tielemans's wonder goal.
In the sixth minute, Iwobi came close to the opener after he was slipped in by Dominic Calvert-Lewin but his effort went inches wide of the post and three minutes later the England international fluffed another chance that was created by the midfielder.
Two minutes before halftime, Iwobi and Calvert-Lewin were denied with decent efforts.
Speaking to Everton's official website, Iwobi stated : "One team took their chances and, unfortunately, we didn’t.
"We had a lot of opportunities, but Leicester were the ones who were able to put it in the back of the net and we couldn’t.
"I had a chance in the first half and with their second goal we were trying to push forward so we are bound to be open at the back. Another counter-attack and they’re able to score.
"I felt like it was a game that could have gone either way.
"You know Leicester are good on the ball so there were going to be spells where they can dominate, but we also had our own periods of possession.
"We have strong midfielders who are able to create chances as well. It wasn’t the problem.
"We had a game plan and stuck with it but it wasn’t to be tonight."
Only the two bottom teams Nottingham Forest (10) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (8) have scored fewer goals than Everton (11) after fourteen matches in the Premier League.
