'Dessers killed Rangers today' - Ex-Celtic star tears into Super Eagles striker after Old Firm derby
Published: December 30, 2023
Former Celtic forward Chris Sutton has criticized Cyriel Dessers for his performance in Rangers' 2-1 loss to arch-rivals Celtic in the Old Firm derby played on Saturday afternoon.
The Nigeria international has been in great form in recent weeks having recorded four goal involvements in the last 3 games in the Scottish Premiership before today's encounter but could not continue his brilliant form as he missed a couple of chances which proved costly for Rangers in the game.
Sutton was critical of the performance of the Nigeria international and reckoned that the Light Blues needed a new striker.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the clash, Sutton said: "Dessers killed Rangers today.
"He had opportunities, wasn't decisive enough and it's not like his link up play is up to much as well. Rangers need to address that situation - they may have already done in Fabio Silva, who wasn't a phenomenal goalscorer for Wolves but is a young player."
"There's been a lot of money spent on him in recent times. But there's an opportunity for him to be the main man for Rangers."
The 29-year-old can't afford to be lackluster in front of goal with Rangers just signing a new striker in Fabio Silva with the arrival of the Portuguese aimed at increasing competition for places.
He has to double down on his efforts in the coming weeks to keep his place in the team and add to the 9 goals he has accrued so far.
The former Cremonese forward wasn't the only one who had a game to forget against Celtic as fellow compatriot Leon Balogun also grabbed the headline for the wrong reason having received a straight red card.
