'I've been stuck for 15 hours' - Osayi-Samuel sends message to CAF after being held hostage in Libya
Published: October 14, 2024
Fenerbahce fullback Bright Osayi-Samuel, has sent a message to CAF to assist the Nigerian national team following unjust treatment by Libya prior to a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.
After securing a 1-0 victory in Uyo, Nigeria was scheduled to face the Mediterranean Knights at the Benina Stadium on Tuesday October 15 for the return leg.
The Nigerian team departed on Sunday, October 11 via a chartered ValueJet aircraft to Libya to continue their preparation for the upcoming match.
However, just an hour before landing, the flight was unexpectedly diverted, landing instead at Al Abraq Airport, more than two hours away from their intended destination.
As a result, the Super Eagles have been stranded at Al Abraq Airport for about 15 hours since their landing.
This distressing situation prompted players, through a statement from William Troost-Ekong, to express their discontent and consider withdrawing from the upcoming match.
In a post in X, Osayi-Samuel denounced the horrible treatment, emphasizing the need for CAF to intervene.
He posted, "I’ve been stuck in a random Libyan airport for 15 hours with no guarantee health & safety. We can do better @caf."
Nigeria currently tops Group D with seven points from three matches, while Libya languishes at the bottom with just one point.
A win for Nigeria in this return leg could secure their qualification for the AFCON in Morocco, while a loss would dash Libya's hopes of advancing.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on CAF to respond to the Super Eagles' plea and ensure a fair playing environment for the Nigerian team.
