Ameobi on scouting duty for Newcastle, watches Russian-born striker who wants to play for Nigeria
Published: April 06, 2025
Retired Nigeria international Shola Ameobi was in attendance at the Vejle Stadion as Vejle took on Aalborg in a Danish Superliga clash on Sunday afternoon.
Since 2019, the Newcastle United Foundation Hall of Fame member has worked as the Loan Coordinator for the Magpies.
According to Bold.dk, Newcastle United, Hamburger SV and Hannover 96 attended the ongoing match between Vejle Boldklub and AaB, with Ameobi representing the Premier League club.
The Newcastle United legend is expected to take a look at Norwegian midfielder Travis Hernes, a player who was loaned out by the Magpies to Aalborg in the January transfer window.
Another player who will be observed at close quarters by the three clubs is Russian-born Nigerian striker German Onugkha, who is arguably the most in-form forward in the Danish Superliga and was named in Vejle's starting lineup.
Before the visit of Aalborg, the dual-national center forward had scored in each of his previous six top-flight matches for Vejle, totaling eight goals, including braces against Brøndby and Aarhus GF.
Born in Moscow to a Russian mother and Nigerian father, Onughka confirmed in September 2024 that he was open to representing the Super Eagles after rejecting a call-up to the Russian national team.
Onugkha is aiming to emulate Brian Idowu and Peter Odemwingie, who were both eligible to play for Russia before making cap-tying appearances for the Super Eagles, and went on to represent the three-time African champions at the 2010 and 2018 World Cups respectively
The 28-year-old Onugkha has attracted interest from German clubs in the past.
