Iwobi and Crystal Palace midfielder who has trained with Super Eagles named in PL TOTW
Published: April 08, 2025
Super Eagles attacking midfielder Alex Iwobi and cap-tied England international of Nigerian descent, Eberechi Eze have both been named in the WhoScored Team of the Week for matchday 31.
Eze trained with the Super Eagles in March 2017 before a friendly with Burkina Faso but could not not make his debut for the three-time African champions as the game was later cancelled.
The onetime Nigeria Football Federation target cracked the Team of the Week after registering a double assist as Palace defeated Brighton & Hove 2-1 at Selhurst Park.
Completing the four-man midfield alongside Iwobi and Eze are Southampton's Mateus Fernandes and Tottenham Hotspur's Brennan Johnson, while the forward line features Jarrod Bowen of West Ham and Bournemouth’s Evanilson.
Goalkeeper Mark Flekken (Brentford) is protected by a back four of Daniel Munoz (Crystal Palace), Dara O'Shea (Ipswich Town), Fabian Schar (Newcastle United) and Keane Lewis-Potter (Brentford).
Iwobi's performance, which included a goal and an assist, earned him an impressive rating of 8.17, showcasing his importance to the Fulham squad.
In a match filled with drama, Iwobi’s contributions were crucial as Fulham came from behind to secure all three points.
The Nigerian's goal came in the 32nd minute, when he unleashed a shot from the edge of the box that deflected past Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
His assist followed shortly after, with Iwobi’s vision and pace playing a key role in creating opportunities for his teammates.
Iwobi's dynamic presence on the pitch was not limited to attacking contributions.
His tireless work ethic and defensive efforts also played a significant role in helping Fulham maintain their advantage, ensuring Liverpool's attempts to equalize were thwarted.
