Onyeka's return: The reason Super Eagles midfielder is heading back to Brentford after Augsburg loan
Published: April 09, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that Frank Onyeka's impending return to parent club Brentford at the end of the season has nothing to do with his performances for Augsburg.
In fact, the Nigeria international is one of the first names on manager Jess Thorup's team sheet, having started twenty-seven out of a possible twenty-nine games since completing his transfer to the Bavaria club.
Onyeka is heading back to Brentford at the end of the season because there was no purchase clause in the deal that took him to the WWK Arena last August.
Last summer, the FC Ebedei product was pushing for a move away from the Bees in search of consistent first team football, rather than remaining a fringe player at Brentford.
In addition, he couldn't turn down the chance to work with Jess Thorup - his former coach at Danish Superliga club FC Midtjylland.
The Super Eagles star tallied tallied eight goal involvements (6 goals, 2 assists) in 28 matches with Thorup in the FC Midtjylland dugout.
Onyeka was a surprising omission from the Nigeria squad for the back-to-back 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, breaking his streak of uninterrupted call-ups since May 2022.
