'Brilliant' - Former Leeds striker applauds George after first senior goal for Chelsea
Published: April 10, 2025
Former Leeds United striker Lucy Ward heaped praise on Tyrique George after netting his first senior goal for Chelsea in a commanding 3-0 win over Legia Warszawa at the Stadion Wojska Polskiego Warszawie.
The 19-year-old forward, who joined Chelsea's academy as a schoolboy, marked a memorable milestone in his blossoming career by opening the scoring shortly after the break.
His goal came from a quick reaction inside the box, pouncing on a rebound after Legia goalkeeper Kacper Tobiasz parried a volley from Chelsea captain Reece James in the 49th minute.
George's well-taken effort set the tone for the remainder of the match, with teammate Noni Madueke adding a second-half brace to seal the Blues' victory in their UEFA Conference League encounter.
Throughout his 75 minutes on the pitch, George was a constant threat to the Polish side's defence. He completed 89% of his passes, had 46 touches, and registered one shot on target before being replaced by fellow youngster Shim Mheuka.
Speaking to TNT Sports, as reported by the BBC, Ward praised the youngster's sharp instincts, applauding his movement and awareness to position himself perfectly for the rebound.
"I'm so pleased for Tyrique George. The changed tempo makes the difference. George is right on hand to drive home the rebound. Brilliant for the young man."
George's goal continues a promising season for the teenager, who made his senior debut earlier in the campaign during Chelsea's 2-1 win over Servette in the Conference League playoff round.
Though he has featured for England at multiple youth levels, George remains eligible to represent Nigeria at the senior international level, keeping the door open for a potential Super Eagles call-up in the future.
