'We're going for three points' - Flying Eagles defender confident ahead of U20 Afcon opener v Tunisia
Published: April 30, 2025
Flying Eagles defender Emmanuel Chukwu has expressed confidence in the team’s readiness as they prepare to face Tunisia in their opening match of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In an interview with the team’s media officer, Sharif Abdallah made available to allnigeriasoccer.com, Chukwu underlined the importance of the fixture and Nigeria’s ambitions for the tournament.
"First of all, I understand the importance of this game as it’s the first match,” Chukwu said.
"Our coaches have let us know how to prepare and how to go about it. We know we are not going for anything short of three points.
"We’re going to collect the three points in the first game. So we are ready and we are on it."
The defender also outlined the team’s overall objective, stressing that qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup is the immediate target.
"We have aims, like our coach said. The aim is to get the ticket to the World Cup first, and then we look forward to taking the trophy home," he stated.
When asked to share a message with Nigerians ahead of the match, Chukwu called for continued support.
"Our message back home is that they should continue praying for us and encouraging us. We will do our best here as we play this tournament,” he said.
The Flying Eagles will face Tunisia on Thursday as they begin their U-20 AFCON campaign.
