Buy before CWC or miss out: Dortmund's full deal for Chelsea loanee Chukwuemeka faces deadline
Published: April 30, 2025
Borussia Dortmund are reportedly facing a tight deadline to secure the permanent signing of Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, following the revelation of a looming expiration date in the player’s loan agreement.
The 21-year-old, who joined the German club on loan during the January transfer window, has rejuvenated his career in the Bundesliga, putting in a string of eye-catching performances that have caught the attention of the club's hierarchy.
Despite struggling for playing time at Chelsea earlier in the season, Chukwuemeka has thrived at Dortmund, showcasing his mobility, versatility, and technical skill.
He has also made tangible contributions on the pitch, scoring once in eight league appearances as Dortmund battled to secure a Champions League qualification spot.
His form has sparked calls for the club to trigger the purchase option embedded in his loan deal.
However, according to Sport Bild, the Black and Yellow are in a race against time.
The report claims that the €35 million purchase option does not extend to the end of June, as is often the case with such clauses.
Instead, it expires before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC), which takes place from June 14 to July 13 in the United States. This timeline presents a financial challenge for Dortmund.
Had the clause extended beyond the Club World Cup, the club could have used potential earnings — reportedly up to €100 million — from the tournament to fund Chukwuemeka’s transfer.
Now, the club must decide whether to act swiftly and secure the funds upfront or risk losing the promising England youth international.
Should Dortmund fail to reach an agreement with Chelsea before the clause expires, they would not only lose the chance to sign Chukwuemeka permanently but also be without him for the Club World Cup.
