Confirmed: Omeruo, once Chelsea's longest-serving player on first team contract, joins CFR Cluj

Romanian club CFR Cluj have officially announced the signing of experienced Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo on a free transfer, as confirmed in a statement published on the club's official website.

Omeruo was once Chelsea's longest-serving player on a first team contract, spending seven-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge before completing a permanent move to Spanish side Leganés in August 2019.

The 31-year-old joins his seventh European club, having amassed over 300 appearances across stints in England, the Netherlands, Turkey, and Spain.

He most recently completed a third spell with Turkish outfit Kasımpaşa.

Omeruo made his debut for the Nigerian national team at the age of 19 against Cape Verde on January 9, 2013.

He played a key role in Nigeria’s triumphant 2013 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, featuring in every match as the Super Eagles lifted their third continental title.

A veteran of the 2014 and 2018 Fifa World Cups, Omeruo has earned 69 caps for Nigeria and has captained the national team on several occasions.

Versatile and experienced, he is capable of playing at centre-back or right-back.

During his time at Chelsea, Omeruo was sent out on multiple loan spells, gaining valuable experience at ADO Den Haag, Middlesbrough, Kasımpaşa, Alanyaspor, and Leganes.
