Loan or sale: Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea at odds over future of Chukwuemeka

German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund are exploring ways to retain Carney Chukwuemeka following the conclusion of his loan spell, but a permanent move remains complicated due to financial constraints.

The tri-national midfielder reportedly earns over six million euros per year, a salary that poses challenges for both clubs.

Dortmund are open to another season-long loan, ideally with an affordable purchase clause estimated between €20 million and €25 million, according to Ruhr Nachrichten, via Fussball Transfers

Chelsea are eager to offload Chukwuemeka on a permanent basis, seeking to reduce their wage bill and comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

The Conference League winners are unwilling to sanction another loan, complicating Dortmund's plans.

There are also fears at Dortmund that another Premier League club could swoop in with a sizeable bid, much like Aston Villa's million move for Ian Maatsen in 2024, after the Dutch full-back impressed on loan in Germany.

With the current financial demands seen as excessive, Dortmund are prioritizing a temporary deal that includes a realistic option to buy.

In search of adequate playing opportunities, Chukwuemeka joined Dortmund on loan in the winter transfer market, and went on to make seventeen appearances for the club, including four as a substitute at the ongoing Fifa Club World Cup.

The Aston Villa academy product has a contract with Chelsea until June 30, 2028.
