Nigerian LB once on the books of Arsenal and Chelsea joins Southampton on scholarship deal
Published: September 02, 2025
Championship club Southampton have announced the signing of promising Nigerian defender Davon Gbajumo from Peterborough United.
The left-back has signed a scholarship deal with the Saints and will initially link up with Andrew Surman's U18s side.
Gbajumo joined Peterborough United in 2024 and quickly established himself as a regular for the club’s U18 side, while also earning appearances at U21 level.
He began his football journey with London-based grassroots side Levels FC before catching the attention of Premier League scouts at the age of 10.
The fullback opted to join Arsenal's academy, where he continued his development before later moving across the capital to Chelsea's Cobham training centre.
Following his departure from Chelsea, the promising defender secured a scholarship deal with EFL League One club Peterborough United, a contract initially set to run until June 30, 2026.
Gbajumo describes himself as an energetic left-back who enjoys moving up and down the flank.
He highlights his defensive solidity as his strongest attribute, while also noting his ability to contribute further up the pitch.
Last season, he was honoured with Peterborough United's U21s Goal of the Season award for his strike against Huddersfield Town.
The 17-year-old joins fellow Nigerians Zach Awe, Abdulhalim Okunola, Princewill Ehibhatiomhan, Nicholas Oyekunle, Victor Udoh and Leo Umeh in the Southampton Academy ranks.
