Cambridge United's Azeez, Shrewsbury Town's Okenabirhie Net Hat-Tricks In Checkatrade Trophy
Published: October 09, 2018
Two Nigerian strikers notched hat-tricks for the respective clubs this evening in the Checkatrade Trophy.
At the Montgomery Waters Meadow, one-time Nigeria Football Federation target Fejiri Okenabirhie scored the last three goals as Shrewsbury Town routed a Tranmere Rovers side that contained ex-Cesena striker Franklyn Akammadu.
The former England C international made it 4-0 in the 56th minute, then curled the ball from inside the box to increase the lead before closing the scoring in the first minute of stoppage time with another close-range effort.
The 22-year-old Okenabirhie netted 19 goals in 68 National League appearances for his previous club Dagenham before he was snapped up by Shrewsbury Town in the summer transfer window.
At the Abbey Stadium, Cambridge United powered past Southampton U21 4-0 thanks to a treble from Adebayo Azeez and a Jevani Brown goal in the second half assisted by ex-Liverpool wonderkid David Amoo.
The hosts took the lead in the 16th minute when Azeez converted a spot kick he won, then fired home from eight yards out to double the advantage in the 37th minute, before scoring from a tight angle to make it 4-0 with two minutes left.
